“Once”, the Tony Award winning musical based on the film will come to the Stranahan Theater for a limited engagement May 6 through May 10.
For those who have not seen the 2007 movie, the stage production follows a similar plot line. Like the Academy Award-winning film, the stage show “Once” tells the story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music. During one fateful week, their friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together. The stage version won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and winner of the 2013 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Stuart Ward and Dani de Waal portray the unusual couple only identified as Guy and Girl in the play. Their paths cross in Dublin, Ireland where Guy is a struggling singer who has decided to give up on a singing career so he may follow his father’s occupation of vacuum cleaner repair man. Girl has been listening to Guy’s final performance in a bar, and she approaches him to tell him how much she enjoyed his music. During their conversation, Girl tells Guy she has a broken sweeper she would like him to fix, but she can only pay him for the service by playing piano for him. Through a series of events, Guy and Girl end up recording a demo record together, but will Guy end up with the Girl?
Stuart Ward has quite the resume. Besides being a musician with his own EP, he has a number of television, film, and stage credits. Most notably, he has appeared on the BBC show “Downton Abbey”, the short film “The Union”, and on stage in “The Go Between”. Stuart recently released his debut EP “Pictures” which he recorded in Toronto while touring with “Once the Musical”. The EP features many of Stuart’s “Once” cast mates.
Dani de Waal has also built a solid career for herself. The British actress has experience in the theatre with parts in “Momma Mia”, “Picnic”, and other roles. She has also performed in concerts including “An Evening with Dani de Waal”.
