Even though Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith may have had to hold up the male side of music for 2014, this year belonged to all the women of music. These women had successful chart-topping years, filled with controversy, hilarity, and news breaking albums.
Some of these women were newcomers to the American music scene, and some seasoned veterans, but nonetheless they proved that women can bite in the music industry, and they bite back with hit albums, and record breaking sales.
This was a “Fancy” year for the punk pop rock Charli XCX. Not only was she featured in the song of summer with Iggy Azalea, but she also became a soundtrack staple for the movie “The Fault in Our Stars.” The artist rolled out her third studio album “Sucker” which included the AMA performed song “Break the Rules,” which left the audience energetic.
Having gone on a North American tour earlier this year in support of the album, XCX also has plans for a 2015 UK tour early next year.
With tracks like “Sucker,” “Break the Rules” and “Gold Coins” its no wonder this 22 year old Brit’s third album was one to watch for being named one of the top albums of 2014 by Billboard and Rolling Stone.
2014 was good to Charli XCX, and it will be interesting to see what singers this pop punker collaborates with in 2015.
Lana del Rey
This has been a semi quiet year for the “Summertime Sadness” crooner, but a powerful year nonetheless. The singer had a new album, and a Golden Globe nomination waiting for her at the end of 2014.
Del Rey released a third full studio album in mid 2014, titled “Ultraviolence,” but before that she went on a US Tour for the first time in support of her previous albums, “Born to Die,” and “Paradise.” Del Rey also made the concert circuit rounds at Coachella and Austin City Limits.
In the beginning of December, she announced she would be going on tour with Courtney Love in 2015 with “The Endless Summer Tour.” Before rounding out the year a Golden Globe nomination was bestowed upon Del Rey for her work with the film “Big Eyes.”
With an album, an upcoming tour, and a Golden Globe nomination, it seems as if Del Rey had an unstoppable 2014, and the following year seems to be shaping up that way as well.
This woman needs no introduction having been in the music industry spotlight for almost a decade. Taylor Swift definitely had everyone paying attention to her the second half of 2014.
With a quiet start to 2014, Swift really picked up 2014 and swept it away with the release of her album “1989.” The album has now been nominated for various awards, including the infectious single “Shake it Off.” It was the first album in 2014 to reach over one million in sales.
With appearances at the American Music Awards and Victoria Secret Fashion Show in November, Swift’s notoriety in 2014 has now skyrocketed. She knows music business, and is making sure everyone in the business knows that, including now enemy Katy Perry, via the track “Bad Blood” on the new album.
Swift has a tour in support of her recent album in 2015, and it seems there is no slowing down this recently converted pop princess.
To say 2014 has been anything “butt” ordinary for Nicki Minaj would be an understatement. With many collaborations, a new album, shocking performances, and a short film Miss Minaj has had quite the year.
Minaj was quiet until the middle of the year when the first single off her new album “The Pinkprint” was released. The cover art was the butt of every joke, and the single “Anaconda” finally dropped becoming one of the anthems of the summer. During the MTV VMA’s Minaj gave two unforgettable performances, one for her single “Anaconda,” and the other was the wardrobe malfunctioned “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Ariana Grande. During this time as well Minaj gave a surprise performance in Paris for Beyonce and Jay-Z’s “On the Run” tour.
After the heat for that calmed down Minaj collaborated with Drake, Lil Wayne and Chris Brown for the end of the year hit “Only.” The single had a controversial start with the release of the Nazi-esque lyric video, and 50 Shades of Grey music video.
After the release of that song came the slower ballad “Bed of Lies,” which Minaj performed at the American Music Awards with Skylar Grey. At the end of November the highly anticipated “The Pinkprint” was released with songs like “Feeling Myself” with Beyonce and “Truffle Butter” with Drake and Lil Wayne. With the release of the album came a short film released in December in support of the album.
For the “Queen of Rap” her reign doesn’t seem to be ending soon, and 2015 will see a tour with Trey Songz in support of the album.
Diva power and collaborations were the keywords for this artist in 2014. With the establishment of her career, and a new album it was a no brainer that 2014 revolved around Ariana Grande.
The pop singer rose to the scene with the summer anthem “Bang Bang” with Nicki Minaj and Jessie J. With a successful first album, “Yours Truly” it was no surprise that Ariana’s second album “My Everything” would have instant success. It seems as if success and fame run in the family as Ariana’s brother Frankie was chosen for the most recent season of “Big Brother,” and enjoying a stint on Broadway.
Grande’s second album includes tracks with Childish Gambino, and A$AP Ferg, the most recent chart topper being “Love Me Harder,” with The Weeknd. Grande’s love life has also been big speculation this year, when she was rumored to be dating rapper Big Sean, when the rumors finally cleared and confirmed the two were a pair.
Along with performances at award shows, Ariana infamously performed at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show, where she was made an instant meme.
2014 seemed like a big year for the Mariah mini-me, but 2015 is going to be even bigger as she is going on a headline tour in support of the album in 2015.
