As 2015 rolls around the corner, the hit building toy franchise LEGO plans to churn out more LEGO sets based off its animated film hit “The LEGO Movie.” Encouraging imagination and/or recreating scenes from “The LEGO Movie” is the new Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack LEGO set (#70817), which hits retail shelves officially Jan. 1.
Being exactly what it says on the tin, the Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack features Batman and a super angry Unikitty from “The LEGO Movie.” As supporting protagonists, the two face off against a Skeletron minifig and a robotic Micro Manager that appears in “The LEGO Movie’s” climactic battle. For $9.99, this LEGO set and its 115 pieces is a bargain for fans of LEGO and “The LEGO Movie.”
The superhero and pop culture icon Batman comes in minifig form. Clad in a black Batsuit with matching cape and cowl, Batman has in his arsenal two Batarangs. Batman also has a grappling hook gun that is assembled like the one seen in “The LEGO Movie.” The grappling hook gun is a bit heavy for Batman to carry without standing him on a LEGO base. Batman has two faces: His scowling face that’s usually associated with being Batman and a smirking face associated with Will Arnett’s cocky portrayal of Batman in “The LEGO Movie.” Each face has a pair of slanted eyes that work with Batman’s cowl as well as a pair of regular eyes intended for use with a Bruce Wayne LEGO hair piece, which isn’t included in the Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack LEGO set. All in all, he’s a fine rendition of Batman in LEGO form with some Bat gadgets.
Super Angry Kitty
The Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack LEGO set also features Super Angry Kitty, which is a recolor of the optimistic Unikitty figure with an angrier face than the Angry Kitty from Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech LEGO set. It’s not the most innovative set of LEGO pieces to build a Unikitty, but any LEGO stop motion filmmakers who want to feature Angry Kitty speaking can use Super Angry Kitty for a mouth open pose while using Angry Kitty from Emmet’s Construct-o-Mech LEGO set for a closed mouth pose.
Making up most of the 115 pieces, this is a 4×4 LEGO cube built into a Micro Manager robot featured in “The LEGO Movie.” At the very least, this Micro Manager gives Batman and Super Angry Kitty something to get angry about for the Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack LEGO set. It features a pair of flick firing missiles and flexible arms. With a flick of an attached lever, this Micro Manager breaks apart as though damaged by Batman or Super Angry Kitty. It’s an expected antagonist for “The LEGO Movie” sets, but it’s constructed well and has some nice gimmicks.
Feeling more like an afterthought to the Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack LEGO set, Skeletron is an emaciated minifig that’s easy pickings for either protagonist. Its best feature is the blaster weapon that Skeletron is too weak to carry without standing on a LEGO base, which is better off issued to a robotic minion of “The LEGO Movie” who has a real minifig body.
The Batman and Super Angry Kitty Attack is an interesting set of individual parts that can play well together. There’s not much room for imaginative building with these 115 pieces. But adding the minifigs to other sets and pieces will augment the building possibilities, which is kind of the main appeal of LEGO in the first place.
