Do you like to wear a fragrance with a seasonal feel? I do and I know people around me do, too It gives you the same sense of time and place that we enjoy with traveling.
The season now is very mysterious and it’s good to have a fragrance that reflects those qualities. With the wonders and creativity of Kwanzaa, Christmas, Hannukah, Solstice and the New Year — with fragrance figuring into Christmas history as well as other history — let’s ponder what we wear on our journeys!
Another mysterious occurrence this year: the longest night in the Earth’s history. We know for a scientific fact that this Solstice was the longest in 4.54 BILLION years. Were you restless the past few nights? Lots of people were during these dark, mysterious times.
So, what to anoint yourself with to celebrate all of this? John Varvatos OUD fragrance! I was very happy to be hosted to experience it.
OUD is an ancient wood originally from Southeast Asia, according to Wiki. Its use has traveled along the same routes as the Silk Road, including as a perfume in the Middle East.
John Varvatos OUD has spicy, woody notes, with a touch of sweetness to my nose: very enticing. It’s got a brightness to it, so I would say you could wear it night or day. It has an alluring unisex appeal. While it’s not in a 3-1-1 carry-on travel bag size, you could easily put it in a Travalo roller. Here’s what they say about it:
The Luxury and Opulence of the Middle East
With Rock and Roll Sensibility
OUD is inspired by the luxury and opulence of the Middle East mixed with the sensibility of the John Varvatos brand.
OUD looks back in time and weaves oriental perfumery references with the deeply mysterious presence of oud oil. The fragrance taps into the signature John Varvatos artisan craftsman’s hip with a truly refined, levated luxury scent.
The fragrance is inspired by the rare and complex oud oil, which is one of the most expensive oils in the world often referred to as “liquid gold.” OUD
contains real and sustainable essential oil of oud sourced from Thailand, which is supported by the Givaudan Innovative Naturals Program launched over seven years ago. In fact, this is the first time that this specific quantity of oud is used in an American fragrance.
Infused with real oud wood and oil, the rich blend of notes in OUD embodies the luxury of traditional Middle Eastern aromas to evoke a woody oriental scent, offering an amazing signature to the OUD fragrance, while the tobacco and leather notes lend the fragrance its John Varvatos rock and roll vibe.
“OUD is my very own Arabian Tale – regal and mysterious. The fragrance is specially crafted to bring the luxury of oud to life but with our unique, signature edge,” said Varvatos. “Like all fragrances in the John Varvatos Collection, it has its own unique DNA. From the exciting hypnotic blend of spices and oud oil, to the unique packaging, it is true to the John Varvatos artisan way of fragrance. OUD expands our offerings and caters to a refined and lavish taste.”
The fragrance is the result of a long-standing collaboration between Varvatos and Givaudan Senior Perfumer, Rodrigo Flores-Roux.
“Traditionally, oud is valued as a unique and prestige fragrance ingredient. For John Varvatos OUD, we took it a step further,” said Flores-Roux. “When I think of the Middle East or Arab cultures in general, I immediately think of the olfactive signature and construction of Mokhalat, which means “Blend” in Arabic. Mokhalat is typically a blend of Rose, Saffron, Amber, Musk and Wood, usually oud. In creating OUD, I took the concept and rearranged the components to include Frankincense, Myrrh, along with black leather and an overdose of raw beast-like qualities throughout.”
TOP NOTES: Luxuriously aromatic, sweet tobacco emanates a fresh richness paired with Levantine Cypress, Hyssop, Clary Sage and Juniper Berries.
HEART NOTES: Opulent spices mesmerize at the heart, adorning this fragrance as a prized treasure with a rich blend of Persian Saffron, Royal Cinnamon from Laos, Malabar Pepper, Sri Lankan Cardamom, Zanzibar Clove Bud, Osmanthus Absolute, Turkish Rose Absolute and Egyptian Jasmine Absolute.
BACKGROUND: The mystery and unmistakable personality of the rare sought after OUD oil matched with Lebanese Cedarwood, Andalusian Labdanum, Myrrh, Opoponax, Frankincense, Black Leather and Amber delivers an everlasting and unique impression.
