They say all good things must come to an end.
Unfortunately, that must also include the University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s baseball team’s perfect start to the 2015 season.
The Tritons were a perfect 10-for-10 to begin the year.
But on Saturday, visiting Southern Indiana ended that streak by defeating UMSL 8-4 in the first game of a doubleheader.
In the nightcap though, the Tritons got back on the winning track by pulling out a 4-3 walkoff win over the Screaming Eagles.
In the opener, Southern Indiana wasn’t no time getting on the board by putting up two runs in the top of the first. UMSL answered with four runs on three hits, including a two-run single from sophomore Chris Mathes, in the bottom half of the first.
But Southern Indiana answered with two more runs in the second and three runs in the third to take a 7-4 lead that the Screaming Eagles would never relinquish.
USI added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.
Junior lefty Kurt McGuire (2-1) took the loss for the Tritons.
In the second game, UMSL rallied to tie the score three different times before finally winning it on a wild play in the bottom of the ninth.
Senior Daniel Seddon led off with an infield single — his third hit of the game — and then took second when junior Justin Busekrus lined a one-out single into left field.
That brought senior Dylan Fieth to the plate, where he rocketed a shot towards Southern Indiana’s Joe Redburn.
The USI second baseman looked to turn the play into an inning-ending double play, but in his haste, he fired a wild throw past shortstop Kyle Niemeier into the left field corner, which allowed Seddon to race around third and score the game-winning run.
Junior reliever Austin Simokaitis (1-0) pitched a perfect top of the ninth to earn the win.
For the year, UMSL is now 11-1 and 6-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, and the Tritons will look to close out the weekend with a Sunday win over USI.
The clubs will play one seven-inning game on Sunday at the UMSL Baseball Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
