While getting ready for Empire Enterprises IPO investor private gala, last week’s shocker ending was finally revealed. Lucious (Terrence Howard) informed the family of his illness after some health scares, and his fiancé, Anika Calhoun (Grace Gealey), was up to no good by spiking someone’s drink. That was just part of the escalating TV drama on “Empire” Wednesday night. Fox’s breakout scripted series, with only four more episodes left, is still breaking television ratings records.
Regarding the baby mama showing up last week, it seems Jamal was married to her when he was 18 years old. His father arranged it. She was one of his backup singers at the time. They had an intimate relationship once and that’s all it took. In a later scene, the little girl Lola is left abandoned in the record company’s elevator. She is rescued, because the mother has gone completely MIA (missing in action). No word yet if Jamal is the biological father. The five-year-old is absolutely certain he’s her daddy.
Courtney Love makes another guest appearance as Elle Dallas. She is scheduled to headline at the IPO event. Cookie (Taraji P Henson) is worried because she’s late for a rehearsal, but comes in clean and sober. Lucious has his first health scare when Cookie complains about Jamal and Hakeem refusing to appear together on stage. After yelling “enough Cookie,” he passes out. Both Cookie and Anika (also known as boo boo kitty by Cookie) want to travel in the ambulance with Lucious. He chooses his fiancé over his ex-wife, while Cookie looks forlorn.
While at the hospital, his official doctor states the so-called miracle treatment from Russia for ALS is a complete scam. As a result, this is what caused his adverse reaction. It was Anika who happened to suggest the former doctor and his wild cure initially. The IPO event finally gets underway when Lucious is released.
Elle arrives on the red carpet excited about performing again. She and Cookie decide to drink some green tea, instead of the overflowing alcohol that’s available. After Cookie leaves to tend to business, Anika shows up at Elle’s table telling her she looks good and is happy to see her. An admirer of Elle (one of the prospective investors since fans were not allowed inside) wants to take a selfie together.
During this quick interruption, Anika takes out a vial and immediately pours it into Elle’s tea. In a later scene Elle is in the ladies room completely out of her mind, she cannot even stand up. Cookie is furious, even when Elle informs her she took nothing. Thankfully Cookie’s sons Hakeem and Jamal perform another music number, this time as headliners for the investors. It’s a great success.
If things couldn’t get worse for Lucious at his own event, he ends up losing his voice. He cannot talk and must give an important speech. Anika informs Lucious she knows the speech since she wrote it, and can read it from the teleprompter. Lucious motions for Cookie to give the speech in his place. In true Cookie fashion, she ditches the prompter and speaks from the heart. The would-be investors love it.
Afterwards, Anika has to leave for an overnight trip to Chicago regarding Lana Del Rey’s album. Lucious’ voice makes a recovery, and informs Anika it had to do with his ALS symptoms. At home Lucious calls in a family meeting. He tells them he’s been diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). Of course the family is devastated, especially Andre who is more concerned about the IPO.
When the kids are gone, Lucious is truly grateful for Cookie’s extraordinary help at the event. There is a rekindled passion in the air between Cookie and Lucious that viewers have been waiting patiently for. They go upstairs to the bedroom. Just then Anika comes home unexpectedly. All is very quiet as she goes upstairs. Through the slightly opened door she sees Lucious and Cookie in bed. She walks away hurt.
