In the wake of the Immigration and Homeland Security debacle, John Boehner’s leadership is being threatened by members of his own party.
(R) Rep. Charlie Dent, a moderate Republican, and others said anti-Boehner GOP members in the House Republican Conference have been expressing to fellow members about the possibility of starting the procedural maneuver which gained force after Speaker Boehner worked with Democrats late Friday. The measure extends Homeland Security’s funding for one week and averted a partial Government shutdown.
Although the procedural maneuver to deem Boehner’s seat as “vacant” is not likely to succeed, a deep division is emerging between moderate Republicans and their ultraconservative counterparts.
Charlie Dent, ” The sad part is that there is a group of people here who are trying to use the Homeland Security Appropriations bill to advance their crass, inside-the-beltway palace coup.”
And the strategy to tie Homeland Security funding to immigration legislation was an unnecessary GOP initiative. This was an ill-thought-out plan to trump President Obama’s executive order to protect immigrants already in the U.S. The Center For American Progress states it would cost $50 billion to deport the population the president is protecting.
Earlier in the week Sen. Barbara Boxer drilled the GOP on their tactic to obstruct the president’s executive order. Boxer,” I’ve never heard of a Republican complaining when Pres. Eisenhower used his executive order power to help immigrants, when Pres. Nixon did the same thing to protect immigrants, when Pres. Ronald Reagan protected immigrants, when George Bush, Sr protected immigrants or when George W., protected immigrants, they all used their authority. Show me one Republican that stood up and said, “Oh, this is outrageous! Let’s impeach the president! But, it’s President Obama and they’re annoyed because he won twice. Get over it!”
As if Boxer’s 19 minute speech fell on deaf ears, GOP heeded not. So, what remains to be laid out is what’s really behind this political cannibalism? Has the government become its own corporate entity? An extension or arm of the financial institutions, with no regard for American citizens?
Millions of dollars and federal work hours are continuously wasted to degrade the president or his policies. Yet, no constructive legislation for the average American seems to cross the lips of GOP. Why?
Just answer two questions GOP and Congress: What is your vision for the good of American citizens and how are you going to make it happen?
