Pagans have been using divination for thousands of years to help them see the past, present and future. They also use divination techniques for answering general questions. There are many forms of divination that can be used and mastered. Ovomancy is a divination technique that uses eggs.
The term ovomancy is also known by other names. These names include; ovoscopy, oomantia and ooscopy. The egg white, the yolk, or the whole egg can be used for divinatory purposes. There are several ways an egg can be used for insight.
There are a few ways the dying eggs can be used for divination. A yes or no divination can be performed by taking three hard-boiled eggs and dying one dark blue, one orange and leaving one its natural color. Place the eggs in a bowl, basket or other container. Close your eyes and move them around. Ask the question that you want answered and then choose one egg. If the blue egg is chosen the answer is a definite no. The orange egg is a yes answer. If the natural egg is chosen, no answer can be given at that time.
Another hard-boiled egg divination that can be performed is also done by dying the eggs. For this one seven eggs are needed. Again, one egg needs to remain its natural color. The colors of the other eggs are blue, green, orange, purple, red and yellow. Place the eggs in a bowl, basket or other container that can hold all of them. Using the same technique as the divination above, choose an egg. The blue egg is a sign of love. Green is a positive sign and can also mean that you are going to have a creative period in your life. Orange can mean that a change is in the future. This change may be positive or negative. The purple egg means that forces higher than you are at work on the issue. Red can either mean that things are moving or to beware of something. The yellow egg means that you should think more about the issue and that it isn’t best to rely on the emotions that you have concerning the question. Again, the natural egg means that there is no possible response at the time.
Reading egg whites
Reading the whites of eggs is another technique of ovomancy. In order to do this the white needs to be separated from the yolk. This can be done by cracking the egg and moving the yolk and white back and forth between the two shells over a bowl, allowing the white to drip into the bowl while the yolk stays in the shells. Be careful not to break the yolk. This can also be done by using a pin to prick a hole in the smaller end of the egg and letting the white drip from the egg.
Although a question doesn’t have to be asked for this divination, you can ask one if there is a question you need answered. Drizzle the egg white into a cup of hot water and read the shapes the white makes as it cooks. Cold water can also be used for this divination. If cold water is used, you would read the shapes the white makes as it hangs and floats in the water. A ring or a bell shape may mean an engagement or wedding in the future. A serpent may mean an enemy or wisdom. Each symbol you see in the egg white will probably have a different meaning.
Using the whole egg
An uncooked hen’s egg can be used to for determining aspects of a woman’s pregnancy. The egg is rubbed all over the woman’s stomach, then broken into a bowl. The number of yolks the egg has determines the number of babies she will have. If there is blood in the egg, the woman might have a miscarriage or a difficult pregnancy and birth.
Egg rolling is another form of egg divination using a hard-boiled egg. With this divination you will need to figure out a symbol for all of the possible outcomes of your question. Use a sharpie or other marker to draw the symbols onto the egg while concentrating on the question. Go to a nearby hill and ground and center yourself. Roll the egg down the hill. The symbol that is face up when it stops is the answer to the question.
