Tom Clancy’s The Division is arguably one of the most anticipated upcoming games for 2015. It’s been a while since we received an update on what is happening with it, but today we’d like to share several updates regarding the game’s testing progress, PvP and when it may be releasing.
The game was originally announced during E3 2013 and it has received rigorous development since then. In a podcast hosted by Massive Entertainment yesterday, The Division Game Director Ryan Barnard talked about the current state of the game and how things like play-testing are coming along.
As far as play-testing for the game goes, The Division apparently has external game testers coming in to play the game “weekly now,” as Barnard said. When you take into account some of the issues Assassin’s Creed Unity had when it launched, it would be surprising if Ubisoft didn’t execute a beta publicly. A game like this certain needs to be ready whenever it does launch.
PvP has been a major topic of discussion when The Division has come up. The fact that this game is going to be an online experience means an even bigger emphasis is being placed on PvP. Barnard got into some more details regarding Massive Entertainment’s vision for PvP.
“What we really want to do is create a public space in the game that is all opt in, so you know when you are moving into an area. There’s this added layer of potentially being engaged at anytime from another player. We really want to bring the fun components of PvP from other games in the genre. We want to try to make the mechanics more positive so you’re never really punished,” Barnard said.
With not too much being written or talked about in regards to the game’s PvP experience, it is difficult to get a solid idea of how this will play out. Massive Entertainment has been adamant about the fact that they don’t want The Division’s PvP mode to be “punishing” for players. They certainly have a strong desire to bring a nice balance to, but it’s still difficult for anyone outside of the studio to get a grasp on it.
Ubisoft continues to stay away from boxing themselves into any sort of a corner with regards to The Division’s release date. When asked about that very topic, Massive’s Martin Hultberg replied that The Division would launch in “sometime 2015… It’s [scarily] close.”
Obviously, you can infer what you wish from these comments in regards to release date. The fact still remains that we do not have a release date or a release timeframe from Ubisoft. One would assume both the next Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six: Siege will launch during the fall, and it would be surprising to see The Division launch any earlier.
It’s getting close to push coming to shove for Massive Entertainment and fans have been patiently awaiting this game since the summer of 2013. Hopefully Ubisoft will have more concrete information regarding the game’s experience and when it’ll be available. The Division will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC when it does eventually launch.
