The town of Debaltseve was in the process of being surrounded by rebel separatists. Ukrainian President Poroshenko rather than let troops and equipment fall into the hands of the enemy has decided to withdraw to a position that will allow a possible counter offensive if possible. The Russians while negotiating in Moscow and Minsk last week was reinforcing the rebels with troops and armor so that they could make the push against this much needed railroad hub. You see Debaltseve is right in the middle of Donetsk and Luhansk. This now gives the rebels the advantage of being able to move heavy equipment and armor between the two capitals.
If you were reading TASS you would believe that Ukrainian troops were surrendering on mass but this is not entirely true. You must understand that anything coming out of Russia these days is extremely one sided. Russian President Vladimir Putin wouldn’t know how to tell the truth if his life depended on it. To this day he categorically denies any involvement with the rebels. Simply put he states there are no Russian soldiers on Ukrainian soil.
Ukraine does have the capabilities to strike back against the rebels but will need to reinforce their troops for the counter offensive. Lithuania and the United States are sending equipment but not necessarily exactly what Ukraine has asked for. Europe as well as the world do not necessarily want an escalation of hostilities but if Russia continues to supply the rebels there may be no other choice but to supply Ukraine with what they need to fight the Russians. If it was merely the rebels then Ukraine would have no problem defeating them but when you have some ten thousand Russian troops along with artillery and tanks, then that’s a different story.
The recent cease fire agreement signed last week seems to be just as worthless as the one signed last September 5th. The rebels feel that they have the advantage and are willing to take as much land as they can from Ukraine as possible. Russia wants as much as it can take as it was Putin who started this conflict a year ago. Putin initially wanted Ukraine to not get involved with Europe and a trade agreement. He was nervous that NATO might be on his doorstep and that bothered him. He sent troops dressed as civilians to stir up Crimea and Eastern Ukraine and now has the world all stirred up over Ukraine. Putin needs to realize that if he continues to keep pushing, eventually the world will push back. Not even Putin is stupid enough to take on the whole planet.
