(Updated) Kosta Karageorge, 23, a reserve defensive lineman on the Ohio State University (OSU) football team, hasn’t been seen he left his apartment around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. The missing football player has a history of concussions and confusion “spells,” and complained about having concussion symptoms in a cellphone text to his mother just before he went missing, according to a Nov. 28 report from CNN.
Also a wrestler, the search for the fifth-year OSU senior began in earnest when Karageorge didn’t show up for a 6 a.m. football practice on Wednesday. His mother, Susan Karageorge, received a disturbing text message from her son around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday which read, “I am sorry if I am an embarrassment but these concussions have my head all f***ed up.”
Police in Columbus, Ohio, are treating Karageorge’s disappearance as a missing person’s report, saying that at this point, “We have no reason to believe otherwise.” Police have some leads in the missing person’s case, including a surveillance video from a store in east Columbus, Ohio. Karageorge’s sister, Sophia, said that her brother was upset Tuesday night and told the roommates sharing his apartment that he was going for a walk in the early morning hours of Wednesday, which was the last time anyone saw him.
Yesterday, more than 150 volunteers gathered in the area where his cellphone was last pinged on Wednesday to get the word out that Karageorge is missing. Those volunteers have posted over 5,000 missing persons fliers “blanketing windshields, utility poles and walls near his apartment,” according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Karageorge “was a hard worker on the field and pleasant off the field. He has been an important player in practice for us, right up until the time he was reported missing,” OSU football coach Urban Meyer said in a statement. “If anyone knows anything about his whereabouts, please help his family and contact the authorities.”
Karageorge is 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 285 pounds. Although some of his pictures depict him with hair, he recently shaved his head and is now described as appearing “bald with a short beard.” Anyone with any information about Karageorge’s whereabouts is asked to call 614-747-1729 or the Columbus police at 614-645-4545.
Update: Tragically, a report just came in from CNN stating that Karageorge’s lifeless body was found inside a dumpster. Police received a call from a mother and son who found the body. Officials say that they believe the young man died as a result from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police were able to identify him at the scene from his unique tattoos. Karageorge’s parents have been notified.
