Once again, Upper West gives back. The well-known restaurant has hosted numerous events for nonprofits. On Sunday, February 22, Upper West hosts an Oscar viewing party benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As the official website states, “The mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.“
The planning for this event began with two volunteers. Inspired by what they had witnessed working with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Sara Fay and Lindsey Adelstein set out to raise funds for this important organization.
The two volunteers met participating in a program called Team In Training, which is run by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “Lindsey and I met and became friends last year when we were training for the Ironman,” explained Fay. The program offers coaching and training for endurance events like marathons, triathlons, and 100-mile bike rides…in exchange for fundraising. Fay continued, “It is a wonderful program for all ages and all fitness levels that trains ordinary people to do extraordinary things while raising money for an extremely important cause. The organization has been around since 1988 and its participants have raised more than $1.4 billion for research, awareness, and important support for blood cancer patients and their families…very impressive.”
Fay has been involved with Team In Training and LLS since 2011, since her father was diagnosed with leukemia. “Team In Training is about making big statements,” added Fay. “Through our training, we spread awareness—and we’re not talking about a 5K fun run. An Ironman triathlon is a 2.6-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, followed by a 26.2-mile full marathon—and you do it all in one day. In fact, Lindsey did her first Ironman in July!”
The two are currently training for different triathlons. “The cause is just as, if not more, important,” insisted Fay. “We really are on the verge of some significant advances in the treatment of all cancers, and the world’s leading researchers are relying on us for support. Treatments are changing radically for the better. They are less harsh and more reliant on the body’s natural defenses to fight cancer.”
Upper West has generously offered to donate twenty-five percent of all sales on Oscar night to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The event begins at 4:30pm (so attendees can experience the red carpet arrivals) and runs though to the completion of the award show. There is a suggested $20 donation.
