People love their cars. And, many of them will go to extreme lengths to protect their investment. A few years ago, a couple of gentlemen developed a system to protect their vehicle, one that would catch the least deviation and lock the car up (sometimes with the would-be terrorist inside!). CNN reported on this “Astrata box” in the fascinating story of these two entrepreneurs and the protection of their vehicle.
More recently, another category of car threat was exposed. The newer threat was that of computer hackers, in a story letting us know that some vehicles could have their brakes slammed remotely, through a computer hack, and a knowledgeable hacker. A vulnerable car helps to complete that equation.
Mitigating the Fears
Whether it is fear caused by the potential loss of one’s valuable car or fear of a computer hacker controlling the car, there is always something that can distract car owners. Fortunately, there are solutions to mitigate the risks.
A year ago, or so, statistics were presented showing that, with the exception of 2012, car thefts were on a decline over the past several years. This theft statistics report also included the claim by FBI that a car is stolen every minute or so. While it may not comfort the car enthusiast with that one-of-a-kind car, the good news it that insurance companies do offer comprehensive insurance that can help cover the loss (theft) of one’s prized possession. This can, at least, help to offset the loss and start someone on the road to the replacement of the investment. This minimizes the loss and gives hope to the car owner.
As far as those hackers? Hackers exist in more areas than just remote controlling cars, but fortunately it is often discussed online. The Internet becomes one of the most valuable tools to find out what is going on with what model of car and the risks that may be associated with the purchase of a particular model. The Internet can be a very valuable tool in many ways, helping to expose risks and also a place to read reviews of the car that you desire to purchase.
Purchasing the New Car Online
Some people have even purchased cars online, through eBay motors. There can be many deals found on eBay. If one is knowledgeable about cars and willing to take a risk, the vehicles can even be bought sight unseen. Of course, this is facilitated when there is the existence of accurate information and a pretty good assurance that it is a steal of a deal. In those cases, the best recommendation, when buying on eBay, is to ensure that the seller is actually a car dealer. Ensure that the homework is done, and the eBay feedback is reviewed to verify that the dealer is reputable. There are also other resources available, through state agencies, and local reviews, to ensure that it is a reputable company. It is always best if there is some guarantee that accompanies the contract, as well. Guarantees like the assurance that the vehicle actually runs.
Once a reputable car dealer is found on eBay, there are a couple of different choices for picking up the vehicle (assuming it is not local). One option is to take an airplane ride to the dealer and spend a night in a hotel before driving the vehicle back. This may be a very economical option. But, then, the cost of the hotel, the food, and the transportation costs can add up, depending on the distance and time involved.
Another option is to use a reputable car shipping service like Montway. If a car shipment option is used, ensure that there are insurance options available and that the insurance is reputable, as well. Also, just like the evaluation of the dealer selling on eBay, ensure that the customer reviews for the car transportation company are also stellar. This can be viewed on the website of the provider, and it can also be reviewed in local listings and reviews of the company.
Putting it in Perspective
Is it true that there are concerns when owning a prized possession like a car, or protecting one’s assets and ensuring ROI (return on investment)? Yes. There are also risks in waking up the next morning and not being hit by a bus. Fortunately, there are many resources available, and especially online, using the Internet. From protecting a car with a special terrorist-stopping box, to finding the best purchase deal, to the car transportation, there is much to be found via the Internet.
