On Monday, March 30, Van Halen performed an eight-song set in front of about 6000 fans on Hollywood Boulevard for “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The event was recorded to air on Monday and Tuesday night. This was a historical show because the band had never performed on national television with their original singer, David Lee Roth.
After waiting all day standing on the sunny street waiting for the show, the show was still delayed for some time before the band took the stage. Once they took the stage, all of the fans, including yours truly, couldn’t be more riled up and ready. The band started the song “Panama” and about halfway through, Roth had to run offstage because he hit his nose with a metal pole that he was twirling. When Diamond Dave went offstage, to have his bloody nose attended to, Eddie, Alex, and Wolfgang Van Halen continued jamming for the crowd. After a few minutes, Roth came back out with a bandage on his nose and the band started “Panama” again.
Their set included the aforementioned song, “Panama” as well as, “Runnin’ with the Devil,””Hot For Teacher,” “Eruption,” “You Really Got Me,” Dance the Night Away,” “Unchained,” and “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love.” Monday night’s telecast featured “Panama”, “Runnin’ with the Devil”, and part of “Dance the Night Away”. The show ran out of airtime just as Roth brought an audience member onstage to dance with him. The band is promoting their new album, Tokyo Dome Live In Concert.
Jimmy watched the concert seated in front of his studio. Valerie Bertinelli and her husband were there supporting her and Eddie’s son, Wolfie, now the bass player of the band. Others who watched from that area were Eddie’s wife Janie, Eric Stonestreet, and Patrick Warburton. Van Halen will start their North American tour in July.
