VIA VAI means coming and going, where you see and meet friends and others. In Astoria, since last June, it means a place to get together and enjoy one another’s company, treating yourself and your companions to the most authentic Italian cuisine this side of the Atlantic in a comfortable setting – and returning again and again.
Owners of VIA VAI, Antonio Morichini (an Italian chef with Michelin-star background and experience) and his wife Cynthia do all that can be done to provide an authentic Italian eating experience. “Via Vai is successful because I’ve brought all my knowledge of food and culinary tradition from Italy,” says Antonio. “We offer the
same food here that is served in Italy, and at a good price.”
Antonio has brought his skills and talent to Astoria, having received his formal culinary training in Italy, working in a number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Rome and Chiavari, and serving as executive chef in Manhattan and Brooklyn restaurants. “My mission is to bring here, the authentic Italian food I grew up with and ate throughout the boot, prepared with the skills learned by working in high-end restaurants in Italy,” he says.
Via Vai’s dishes and their inspiration come from all regions of Italy. They include numerous foods but my two favorites are the pizzas, which are very thin and light, with dough allowed to rise for up to 48 hours, deepening flavors and making it easier to digest. And the butternut squash flan – brand new for fall 2014 – (with breaded egg yolk, hazelnut/almond flour and parmesan fondue that includes a truffle oil&balsamic vinegar reduction.
Every night Via Vai offers very popular off the menu specials, which always include a few pasta dishes ($18-20) and the day’s offering of branzino, a Mediterranean fish prepared in various ways from traditional to innovative (with side vegetable, $29.)
Their incredible lunches include a three-course prix fixe lunch for $14 or $18, plus any item from the regular menu, as reviewed in the highly acclaimed WALL STREET JOURNAL LUNCH BOX.
VIA VAI is the perfect venue for business lunches, dinners and small gatherings. Speak to Antonio to cater your next event, either on site at Via Vai or on your site. He will work with you to create the perfect menu for your needs. Among other things, trays of Via Vai’s homemade lasagna, cannelloni and eggplant parmigiana are an easy way for you to enjoy your company in your location.
