A video posted Wednesday to YouTube shows Muslim students at Brooklyn College praising Allah for the rise of ISIS, the militant Islamist group that has taken large areas of Syria and Iraq. Pamela Geller said there were Arabic calls of praise as she described videos and the atrocities committed by the group.
Geller also posted a picture of students giving the one-finger ISIS salute on Twitter, but, she added, the photo had been removed. Censorship of articles and photos mentioning Islam has become more common recently on social media sites like Facebook. Earlier this month, for example, an article we published was censored and blocked by Facebook within twenty minutes of being posted. We reached out to Facebook, but never received an explanation. Given Facebook’s history, it is also quite possible this article may be censored as well.
She also said “there was a lot of support for the Islamic State in the room” where she was speaking. According to Geller, some 80 percent of the audience was made up of Muslim students who, she added, engaged in sneers, jeers and laughter, making it more difficult for her to make her presentation.
Afterward, Geller said, Muslims gloated on Twitter that they had shut her speech down. But, she added, the claims were not true.
“I gave my entire talk and took questions,” she wrote. “They shut down nothing.”
Geller said she “tried to have a genuine discussion with them,” characterizing her demeanor as patient and indulgent. But, she added, it was to no avail.
“A couple of fights almost broke out,” she said. “Muslim students were reading questions off their phones, sent from their puppetmasters, about inane irrelevant things such what did I think of some Muslim basketball player and such.”
She also tried to engage Muslim girls in the audience, asking where they stood on victims of honor killing and oppression. In response, she said, “there were just more jeers, more catcalls.”
“This event made it clear,” she wrote. “Brooklyn College and our nation’s universities in general are not about learning, or about reasoned discourse, or about a search for truth. They are centers for fascist indoctrination. And the fascists were out in force tonight.”
One woman identifying herself as an “open-minded Christian” stood to thank her, Geller recalled. The woman, a survivor of genocide, was targeted by the audience “like vultures on carrion,” causing Geller to be concerned for her safety.
“You laughing and screaming and taunting and attacking this woman, this is what the Nazis looked like,” Geller told the unruly crowd. “This is a victim of genocide. You’re depraved and you’re soulless.”
“That is not a safe environment for human beings,” she added. “From the moment I began to speak, the Muslim students were cackling and catcalling with Jew-hating remarks and jeers. It wasn’t the belly of the beast. It was the beast’s colon.”
One person who reportedly attended the event compared it to the “Jerry Springer Show,” calling the questions leveled at Geller, “asinine and moronic.” The commenter went on to say that “Brooklyn College should be ashamed of these students and they owe Pam Geller an apology for letting this event deteriorate into chaos.” Video of one student praising Allah for ISIS can be seen above — at least for now.
