Russian President Vladimir Putin started 2014 off with the wonderful Winter Olympics in Sochi. The games were a far cry from the rest of the year he would enjoy. Putin had been doing some behind the scenes work in Ukraine. Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was wanting to sign a trade agreement in the fall of 2013. Putin got wind of it and was able to talk Yanukovych out of the agreement. This would not sit well with the residents of Kiev and western Ukraine. Yanukovych would be run out of Kiev, and Russia would start to undermine the interim government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk. Putin would talk a good talk but would never follow through on any of the agreements. While Putin was enjoying the world stage during the Olympics he was sending troops across the Ukraine border into the Crimea. These personnel were instigating riots. Allowing the citizens who spoke Russian to scream for help because they were being harassed.
Putin would deny any and all that he was accused of doing in Ukraine. When the annexation of Crimea took effect in March, Putin would turn his attention to Eastern Ukraine. The European Union and the United States would place sanctions on Russian business and commerce. Along with sanctions on certain Russian businessmen.
Vladimir Putin would boast to prime ministers of other countries that Russia had over 5,000 nuclear warheads and he wasn’t afraid to use them. He would talk of taking Kiev in a matter of weeks and splitting the rest with Poland. Every time a cease fire or truce has taken effect in Ukraine Putin has yet to keep an agreement.
Putin’s Russia had a hand in shooting down a Malaysian airliner killing some 298 people. Putin has been sending men and weapons across the border into Ukraine. Russia has been building up the rebel separatists of Eastern Ukraine. All the time denying that he has anything going on in Ukraine. In the past few months the Russian economy has fallen to all time lows. Putin has financially stretched himself thin. He has the military in Ukraine. The ruble has taken hits dropping it to all time lows. He has lost mega money on the drop in oil prices.
Putin has tried to establish a new Soviet Union but will not be able to finish the job with NATO on his neck and the Western sanctions holding him down. Putin has overextended himself and if he can’t turn it around soon. He could be looking in from the outside if you get my drift. The Russian people will only stand for so much. Putin must turn this all around or he will be without a job. Happy New Year Mr. Putin!
