Two new comedies gave the box office a much needed boost this weekend. “Home”, the latest animated family movie from Dreamworks that follows a misfit alien’s adventures on Earth, topped the box office with a substantial $54 million. Meanwhile, the weekend’s other big new movie, “Get Hard”, also did very well, following in second with $34.6 million. That movie, an R-rated comedy, appealed to the opposite half of the movie-going audience from “Home”, who went to see it despite overwhelmingly negative critical reviews. It stars Will Ferrell as a businessman going to jail for fraud who hires the streetwise Kevin Hart to help him adjust to life in prison. Both of those movies knocked last weekend’s number one movie, the “Divergent” sequel “Insurgent”, out of the top spot. “Insurgent” sank down to third this weekend with $22.07 million.
The horror movie “It Follows” expanded to theaters nationwide this weekend after a few weeks in limited release, during which time positive word of mouth was able to spread, likely contributing to its box office success. The movie follows a teenager who starts to feel like a presence is constantly following her. It has received rave reviews praising its originality, and this weekend it rocketed to fifth place with $4.02 million.
