Did you know that today, over 2,000,000 children have a parent serving on active duty in the military. More than 51,000 American kids have a parent that was killed or wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Would you agree that thirteen plus years fighting two separate wars has taken an incredible toll on our American families? We are all grateful to our military for their service and when we think of our veterans we envision men and women in uniform and we recognize them for what they do, but so often we are not aware of the impact it has on their children.
Gratitude Initiative (GI) is a non-profit organization who has made it their mission to provide educational support and college scholarships to the children of families of military service members, veterans, disabled veterans and those killed in the defense of our country. The organization is specifically set up to serve those who have served us since the attack of 9-11-01. They serve the families of active duty members of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard; Reserve or National Guard members who were activated for active duty service since 9-11; A veteran who was honorably discharged from active duty.; A combat wounded or disabled veteran with a service connected injury; A service member who was killed while on active duty.
What will GI do? This is a non-profit that will reach out to our military’s children as early as the eighth grade to provide them with guidance and programs to get them started on the path to college. They will educate and equip first with college prep and college readiness programs because GI knows it serves a student of little good just to throw money at them only to have them struggle at a university that is not a good fit for them or have them switch majors multiple times before they find what is right for them. Statistics indicate students that are not ready for college stay in school too long which incurs tons of debt for them.
And once the student has successfully completed the GI College Success Academy and College Readiness Courses, scholarship funds will be awarded to the program graduates so they can attend college or technical school. They will have on-line professional tutoring as the child progresses in their studies so they will be college ready before and after they enter their freshman year in college. The scholarships will be renewable for a total of up to four years and paid directly to the institution and applied towards tuition, books, fees, room and board and other qualified educational expense.
Gratitude Initiative will be able to accomplish its mission only through the generous support of its donors and partners, please receive them with an open heart when they reach out. Americans answered the call to duty, leaving spouses and children behind to keep us safe. Let’s answer the call of duty when we are asked to give back. Thank you for all of your support.
