The new spinoff series of The Walking Dead will take place in California and has already begun filming in Vancouver, because it costs too much to actually film in California.
The apocalypse will happen all over again this year, starring new characters, in this side-boot re-origin story. Fear the Walking Dead, Summer 2015.
Yes, this new show will start before the events of the show that’s been on the air for five years, but it will share no characters or plot connection to that long-running AMC show. That dodges the problem with AMC’s other prequel spinoff, Better Call Saul, where we already know what happens to the main character. This time, the only thing the shows will share is that zombies are around, but nobody calls them that.
It’s long been established that nobody uses the “zed” word in the Walking Dead universe because zombie movies don’t exist there. This is all new to them. So now we get to watch new characters figure out for themselves what can be done about this mysterious virus (nothing), what to call these new creatures (anything other than zombies) and what to do about them (head trauma, mostly).
That’s not to say the story couldn’t be interesting, just that everyone in it will look like idiots compared to people in the genre-savy real world. It’s hard to make a show about people discovering what everyone watching already knows.
One of the great things about how The Walking Dead started is that it skipped over the initial outbreak stages which have been told in a thousand B-movies, getting straight to the story of long term survival that has carried them through five seasons.
Anyway, like the monsters of the fictional outbreak they depict, zombie TV shows continue to multiply and spread.
