Westwood defeated Pascack Valley, 43-32, in high school girls’ basketball, in the second round of the BCWCA’s 2015 Bergen County Tournament.
Pascack Valley earned the first lead of the game by playing a lock-down man-to-man defense and patiently working for open outside shots on offense. Their defense kept Westwood from penetrating and their ability to box-out kept Westwood off the boards. Westwood called a timeout and made some adjustments. When they returned to the floor with a new design they were able to score. PV led at the end of the first quarter, 10-8.
PV’s Shannon Cullo know hows to cut to the basket. She can also weave between defenders and finish off two steps. She had 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 points.
With 5:37 left in the first half Westwood tied the game, 12-12. Westwood’s Jaide Hinds-Clarke is shot-blocking machine. One of her blocks sent a shot flying across court and out-of-bounds. Her incredible leaping ability enables her to secure rebounds and own the paint. She had 11 rebounds, 1 steal, 5 blocked shots, 2 assists, and 9 points. With 2:49 left Westwood took their first lead, 13-12. Westwood’s Emily Molk did a great job driving in, shooting off the dribble, and drawing fouls. She had 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 13 points. Westwood led at the half 17-14.
Pascack Valley’s Lindsay Grilo worked hard to box out and rebound over bigger players. She had 8 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist, and 9 points.
Westwood’s Samantha McClutchy returned to the court in the second half and made several strong drives to the basket. Her jump stop and pump fake drew fouls. She had 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 13 points. Westwood led at the end of third quarter, 31-25. PV’s Kelly Petro played smart, making crisp passes and cutting hard through the paint.
With 6:20 left in the game Pascack Valley trailed by three points, 33-30. They called a timeout and returned with a full-court man-to-man press. However, Westwood did not falter. With 3:43 left they led 36-30.
Westwood will take on the winner Immaculate Conception in the next round at Becton High School.
