We receive many questions regarding the “extra” marks found on the backs of some Gorham pieces. According to Gorham Customer Service, “Up until the 1980’s, Gorham sterling was available in different weights:
H – Heavy
E – Extra Heavy
M – Massive
R – Regular
T – Trade”
You can see an example of the “T” weight mark in the picture (inside the diamond shape). The weight mark may appear in different places on pieces and may or may not be enclosed within a diamond. Some are raised above the surface as in the picture and some are simply die-stamped on the surface. We see them most often on teaspoons. “T” and “R” are the most common, the lightest and roughly equivalent. We’ve seen Gorham Chantilly teaspoons ranging between 18 grams and 30 grams in weight.
Other manufacturers used similar marks but not to the extent used by Gorham.
