And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many;…And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand:… Judges 7:4,7
Virtually every one of you have heard your boss say you can do more with less at some time over the years. God does not shrink from the task of proving Himself to man. All through scripture he puts His people at a “disadvantage” in order to prove Himself to the nations. He accomplishes this by doing more with less. He sent lowly David up against Goliath, God did more with less. He chose small and weak Israel instead of a great nation mighty in war, God did more with less. He even demanded that Gideon shrink the size of his army before He would deliver Midian into his hands, God did more with less. God even warns His people to not boast about their salvation because He accomplishes even that for them.
Man, in his arrogance, continuously wants to prove he does not need God. Man builds towers to heaven inventing religions in which he can be good enough to earn his own salvation. He creates schemes by which man can evolve without need of God as creator. He builds massive bureaucracies to show that man can take care of himself without God’s provision.
It is precisely because God created man and created within man a need for Himself that man must try to replace God and His sustaining hand with false gods. Many times he does not even know that he is erecting a false god as he constructs it. The case in point most relevant here is the massive bureaucratic state that has been erected in the United States over the past 165 years or so.
The north, which had largely strayed from the orthodox Christian faith upon which the nation had been anchored needed to destroy that orthodoxy which had experienced a revival in the south. In a process, that has spanned many decades now, men began to deny the authority of God and began to wrest it in the hands of an all powerful state. Good people would argue that it would take the massive collective of all the people in order to solve problems, real problems, but problems that God can deal with, doing more with less.
There were children that were slipping through the cracks before the state mandated compulsory education. Again children were going hungry before the state took it upon themselves to feed the poor. Yes children were dying from drug use before the state created a domestic army to fight the drug war. Why did the state decide to make health insurance mandatory? Well, because some Americans were not receiving healthcare because they did not have health insurance. Never mind that the state had already caused the astronomical prices in healthcare by creating false demand and scarcity of resources in the health care industry.
All of this concentration of power in a huge centralized state because there is not enough people in local communities to address all of these problems. That though is just an attempt to keep God out of the picture. With God though, less is more. He chose David over the whole army of Israel. He chose Israel over the larger nations of the world. God demanded that Gideon reduce his army so that it would be known that God can accomplish what man cannot.
Can God educate a nation of children without man erecting a giant bureaucracy? Can God feed the poor using the resources of His people who cheerfully give? Can God heal those who do not have health insurance? Of course He can and when He accomplishes these things without the schemes of man He is showing Himself to a lost and dying world not only for their material but for their spiritual benefit. God not only can but He will do more with less just as He did with Gideon..
