In December 2014, a Brazilian serial killer confessed to killing 42 people. The offender in this case is a 26 year old man named Sailson Jose De Gracas who confessed to killing 37 women, 3 men, and a 2 year old girl within a 9 year span. Unfortunately, a serial killer who escapes authorities could very well be acting on urges from an un-treated mental illness. In this article we will look at what could have produced such a drastic life choice for such a young man.
This Brazilian serial killer told police that he started stealing purses at age 15 and that during that time he had begun to think about killing. He admitted to murdering his first victim at age 17. His description to police about the murders was portrayedwith satisfaction. He said he got excitement and pleasure when his victims fought and would even masturbate once they were dead. As a teenager he began a life of crime not caring about the consequences and then found pleasure from his violent acts. Sailson began to develop a paraphilia which are known as strong repetitive sexual fantasies, behaviors and urges that most who suffer from feel they cannot control (AllPsych, 2014).
For Sailson, the entire reason he killed was based off the sexual gratification he would get from choosing, stalking and studying his victims until the time was right for him to enjoy watching and savoring his female victims scratch, scream and then perish. He also admitted to killing the 3 men for the money. In this case, Sailson exhibited sexual sadistic behavior which occurs when a person becomes sexually aroused by inflicting pain, suffering and humiliation on another person (AllPsych, 2014). According to to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual used to diagnose mental illness, something in a person’s past causes a paraphilia disorder to develop such as a traumatic event such as sexual abuse.
In cases with physical abuse, sexual abuse and other traumatic events, children naturally develop defense mechanisms as a way to block out their feelings in order to survive. This is how many psychopaths and those with antisocial personality disorder get their start and go on to commit heinous acts without remorse, because they don’t care about others, themselves or the consequences. Often a person who is a psychopath has an untreated mental illness like this Brazilian serial killer who clearly suffers from a paraphilia. He could also have ADHD with impulsive and compulsive urges, so left untreated could turn into a national nightmare as seen with this sadistic killer who got sexual pleasure from killing his victims. If no one helps these individuals stop, they won’t stop, ever.
While the capture of this sadistic Brazilian serial killer is a big win for the country, how many more just like him are roaming the streets feeding their sexual urges? When it comes to a person who is a psychopath, they will stop at nothing to feed their sick desires, so if you or someone you know has a personal experience with these behaviors, seek professional help in Santa Ana and elsewhere.
