It’s official! The contestants for season 20 of the hit dance series ‘Dancing With the Stars’ (DWTS) have been announced, and the first name to be revealed to America Tuesday morning February 24 on “Good Morning America,” was legendary diva Patti LaBelle. “Get ready to watch this Grammy winning, platinum selling, living legend light up the ballroom,” were the words co-host Tom Bergeron projected to a live audience, as he introduced the “Somebody Loves You,” timeless southern vocalist to the stage alongside her dance partner Artem Chigvintsev.
Patti’s name wasn’t the only gem to be announced on Tuesday morning. She will be joining the likes of “Three’s Company” actress and entrepreneur Suzzanne Somers, NFL star Michael Sam and eight other celebrities this Spring on season 20. Patti LaBelle has already taken us on a musical journey with her career and her extensive music catalog. She’s allowed us to bring just a portion of her southern cooking style into our own kitchens with her LaBelle Cuisine cook books and recipes. And if you’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing her perform live, then you know that she lights up the stage when she kicks off her shoes and gives the audience her signature Patti move by fanning out her arms and flapping them like wings. But the question that is yet to be determined with this DWTS endeavor is – can she dance?
We know past seasons have included the likes of daytime talk show host Wendy Williams, who danced with partner Tony Dovolani and only lasted three weeks into the competition before she was eliminated. Although, according to a Today report, Wendy credits her elimination to her unwillingness to be “scripted” for the show, stating ‘if she had given ‘a little bit more sassafras,’ she would’ve been in the competition for longer.” But, viewers of the show have a difference of opinion which is simply – she can’t dance.
Back in November of 2011 when Wendy participated in the show, she and her team posted on the WendyShow website how DWTS needs new judges. Although some of the comments showed that they were in agreement with this statement, others were not so nice. One commenter wrote: “Wendy has to know she wasn’t good! Some people can’t dance ( I used to ) but too old now! When I did dance I knew when I was having an “off” night so why can’t these people on DWTS tell how bad they are?”
She wasn’t the only one though. There were a host of others that entered the competition and quickly left due to lack of dancing skills. Reality star Kim Kardashian, who competed on Season 7, is one of them. She was third to be voted off that season. She may have been nice to look at but dancing the “Fox Trot” was just not her thing. Us Weekly explained it this way, “Kim Kardashian is a lot of things: a reality star, a boutique owner, a style icon. One thing she’s not? A great dancer.”
The question is will this be how the story ends for Patti LaBelle? The 70-year-old has definitely triumphed over successful dance music with hits like, “Lady Marmalade” with the group Labelle and “New Attittude,” but… can you say you’ve ever seen her dance to those songs?
I guess we will have to tune in to watch the season 20 premiere of “Dancing With the Stars” on Monday, March 16, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, to find out the answer. Will she be able to add “dancer” to her already long list of things she does oh so well which makes her the queen that she is?
