Our late starting, long lasting winter, has provided an opportunity to explore the slow to emerge spring flowers of the March Bank of Winterthur. Early April is ideal to view the colors more typical for late February and early March. This year, however, the timing is perfect to also check out the museum store plant shop arrivals ready for your garden.
Welcome the yellows, purples, snowdrops and snowflakes
While we breathe a hesitant sigh of relief that winter is finally over, we hope, spring has arrived at Winterthur. Recent snow and frosty nights have delayed the trigger for spring to have fully sprung. The colors are newly emerging from dried leaves and cold soil. Boldly blooming are the sunny yellow winter aconites, white giant snowdrops and purple glory-of-the-snow. Don’t let their names conjure images of that previous season so persistent to stay. These spring flowers, as well as, emerging friends such as the crocus, spring snowflakes, and bluebells, are surely a sight for winter-weary eyes. The March Bank of Winterthur planned well in mass sowing of countless bulbs and wildflowers. The color scheme of early spring calls for sunny and bold yellows including the brilliant witch-hazels near the visitor center. Here and there, crocus and giant snowdrops mix in white and purple to brighten along the paved paths and rounded woodland hills of Winterthur. It’s as if you were given an extra month to enjoy the birth of spring.
Garden strolls of high and low views
While the colors along the March Bank are cheery, plan to extend your walk up along Sycamore Hill with its grand vistas to the countryside. From the precisely set gazebo you can gaze a distance beyond the pond and out to the winding road, to the Bristol summerhouse at the crest. This southern facing hillside also offers early colors from the planted trees scheduled to flower in June. There are the early signs of seedpods and buds for these dogwoods, sycamore and magnolias. For now the view is wide open to bathe in all the sun before the leafy canopy overtakes with summer. Take time to stroll along the paved walkway around the quarry garden where shrubs show a tinge of green here and there and daffodils seem almost ready for full bloom, delicate and bold at once. Weave along the pathway back to the glade up along the March Bank once again to the gardens near the Conservatory. But don’t head straight back to the visitor center just now. The museum store, with its newly renovated plant shop and patio area, is a must visit site. The delayed outdoor garden colors have timed perfectly to the new plant arrivals for purchase. The patio is welcoming in bright colors with landscape plants and perfect spring annuals from cheery pansies in every shade, to the hellebores, or Lenten rose, of muted shades of elegant. Soon, spring colors will be everywhere as brown turns to green hues. For now, each and every color is special and refreshing. Breathe in the delicate freshness of spring at Winterthur, from the March Bank to the hilly vistas and lower gardens so well defined. Finally, nature is at its most delightful as it awaits your appreciative exploration.
