Worship in My City touched down in Brooklyn on Sunday March 8th, 2015, presented by A-Minor Musik & Inaxxs. The venue was the innovative creative space at Shapeshifter Labs in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. The setting for the evening was an intimate one which coincided well with the acoustic theme for the night. The night showcased two amazing female vocalists – Denise Renee and Danielle Lewis (Pure Worship Band), singing praises to God in their own way.
Denise Renee took the stage first accompanied by an acoustic guitarist. She opened up with a remixed version of the classic “Total Praise” by Richard Smallwood. The presentation was phenomenal as she used a vocal loop machine to layer her voice and record different parts on the spot. Denise showed her strong vocal ability and soul as she adlibbed, making the song her own. Denise encouraged attendees to trust God and seek Him more, because everything is found in Him. The last song of Denise Renee’s set was an original piece, which was officially released as her first single the week prior entitled “More of You”. The audience connected with the song as Denise sang her heart’s cry with help on vocals from her guitarist.
The clear theme of worship was set from the beginning of the night and Danielle Lewis’ musical director Jeff Montestime spoke briefly on ‘what is true worship?’. He read a portion of scripture found in the book of Joshua chapter 6 verses 1 – 16. The story revolves around the children of Israel marching around the city of Jericho as instructed by God and the result of their obedience. Jeff highlighted that obedience is a “key act of worship” and it involves a total surrender to the one who is being worshipped. A true connection must be established before true worship can take place, said Jeff.
Jeff’s piece on worship was a perfect segue for Danielle Lewis to step to the mic. Danielle started her set off with a high energy ‘call and response’ song called “Shout it Out”, which engaged the audience. The next song “We Offer (The Anthem)” was inspired while Danielle was on the train listening to Prophetess Juanita Bynum. A very heartfelt song that had hands lifted and people standing all over the room, giving praise to God. Danielle noted that revival is still happening in America, although the Big Apple can be cynical and cold at times.
A smooth transition was made into “Hosanna” as His presence was felt in the room. Danielle lead with authority speaking what the Lord was working out for those in attendance. The Bible declares “in His presence there is fullness of joy” , so Danielle wisely remained at that point to let the Lord minister to His people.
The night ended on a high note with the song ‘Redeemed’ co-written by Matthew Thomas. The island influenced song had attendees out of their seat and singing along. The band and background vocals sounded great and complimented Danielle well. The acoustic bass and acoustic guitar for the night provided a great feel throughout all of Danielle’s song.
