Food Network’s series “Worst Cooks in America” will return for a sixth season on Sun., Jan., 4 2015 (9 p.m. ET/PT), according to a press announcement from Food Network. Returning Chef Anne Burrell will compete with first-time opponent Chef Tyler Florence in the seven-episode series about whipping kitchen-challenged recruits into skilled cooks.
The Worst Cooks are led through a culinary boot camp to transform their kitchen skills into culinary expertise, or at least to make edible food for the family. The grand prize, awarded to one contestant, is $25,000. Professional Chefs Anne Burrell and Tyler Florence push their recruits to win victory and to win bragging rights as the best coach.
The results can be comical. Food Network searches for truly horrible cooks with a track record of kitchen disasters. Mentored by experts and motivated by the chance for a big win, the amateurs learn how to plan meals, combine ingredients and make some impressive dishes. Even if they do not win, they pick up a few kitchen skills in the process, meaning that they go home with the ability to produce family meals.
“Welcoming a new roster of Worst Cooks is an annual tradition, and our viewers love watching their comical kitchen mishaps evolve into serious cooking chops,” said Bob Tuschman, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Food Network. “Anne and Tyler are both fiercely competitive and determined to whip their contenders into tip-top culinary shape, and the transformations are remarkable.”
The season starts with an open call that brings terrible cooks to the table to meet Anne and Tyler. They select 14 recruits who go on to boot camp where they present their signature dish. The contestants are divided into Team Anne and Team Tyler, who are now competing for the bragging rights of being the best cooking coach. Like other reality competitions, the least successful cook from each team is sent home, eliminating two each week.
The first challenge is to make the ultimate romantic meal, an important meal for person one wants to please more than anyone. Anne’s red team tackles Roasted Chicken with Israeli Couscous and Pomegranate Sauce, while Tyler’s blue team makes Chateaubriand with Mashed Potatoes and Roasted Mushrooms.
Upcoming episodes feature a food trivia game, international taco themed competition and a breakfast menu challenge with special guest, Good Morning America Chief Meteorologist and resident foodie Ginger Zee. The season culminates in a finale on Sunday, Feb 15, when the winner is declared and the most improved recruit is awarded a $25,000 grand prize.
