Like many individuals, no matter how talented they are, if their work or talent is not seen and enjoyed by the public then is it a waste of time? Artist, illustrator and author Gregg W. Mello might not agree with that, as he has a dream which includes his illustrations to come alive in a new book called “Maggie and the Feather of Flight.” So, no, his talents should not be a waste of time!
Gregg’s background includes graduating with a bachelor’s degree in illustration at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He also has support from his family and friends. He is in high hopes that through an online Kickstarter event he will be able to see his first dream, in a children’s book, become a reality!
According to Gregg, “Maggie and the Feather of Flight” (at Kickstarter) needs to get off the ground and soar to new heights. With others’ help she can land on shelves everywhere!
As with any project, though, Gregg is aware that there are going to be an abundance of risks and concerns that he will face in getting his book published, but he is confident that he can overcome those obstacles. There is a Dec. 21, 2014 deadline date for this project. For more information go to Kickstarter.
“My goal is to produce a bookstore quality product that is distribution ready. Since I will be self-publishing ‘Maggie Dewdrop and the Feather of Flight,’ this is definitely one of my biggest concerns money-wise. I have researched many self publishing companies and have found several that are somewhat reasonably priced while offering a best quality outcome. Still, this will most likely be the biggest expense I face.” – Gregg W. Mello
Apparently the creative process in developing Maggie Dewdrop boiled down to the basic notion of “write what you know.” Nearly every child, at one point or another, has felt the burden of wanting to fit in. Reflecting further on that aspect of the author and illustrator’s own journey through childhood. It became evident this was to be the driving theme for Gregg’s first Maggie Dewdrop book.
In addition, with his story about Maggie, Gregg hopes to convey to young readers a reassurance that it’s okay to be different and to stand out… even if it’s because you’ve been adopted by a family of bats! His goal is to create a charming and relatable character who would speak to younger audiences.
“I wanted Maggie to share her struggle through her eyes and from her unique perspective. My hope is that children will connect the dots and apply Maggie’s journey to their own lives.” – Mello
As most authors discover, like Gregg, there will be even larger expenses that will include marketing, website design, promotion and social media integration. The remaining funds will go toward the best artist-grade supplies to ensure quality illustrations for his book, the purchase of stock for hand-painted gifts as well as printing services that will render accurate reproductions for anyone who wishes to donate.
Meeting the deadlines of his pledges will be an enjoyable, but breakneck journey that will include a lot of work! Every backer will deserve nothing but the best that Gregg can create, and he appreciates everyone’s support more than words can express.
“Cheers to the children who enjoy this book and to those of you who support my effort in creating it. Together we can make Maggie soar!” – Mello (on video)
