Don’t call Zendaya Coleman a role model as she doesn’t want to be thought of as one. She would rather just be called a ‘real model,’ and this girl is as real as it gets. The Disney Channel star sat down with Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America” and was posted by Yahoo News on Wednesday as she talked about hosting the Radio Disney Music Awards and also the controversial remarks made by Giuliana Rancic that caused such a ruckus.
Zendaya knows what she wants, how she wants it, and how to get it. Not only does she star in Disney’s “K.C. Undercover” and is a talented recording artist, but she is also hosting the Radio Disney Music Awards for the first time this weekend. As “GMA” puts it, she has taken the world by storm and it has been a crazy ride for the teen. She said that she is so excited and honored to be hosting the awards, but also a little nervous.
“It’s a little nerve-wracking because I’ve never really hosted before, but I’ve got skills,” she said. “I can pull it off– do a little improvisation.”
She dished that there will be a few surprises, some cool presenters, and of course, many outfit changes that she is looking forward to. Zendaya is a nominee for the You’re So Fancy award as she is quite known for being a fashionista. It will be fun to see what kind of outfits that she will be wearing throughout the show.
How did the former “Shake It Up” star succeed in music and television without taking her clothes off or posting sexy selfies? She does it by being a good kid. Zendaya takes the ‘real model’ seriously to show other kids and teens that it is okay to just be yourself.
“I don’t want to pretend to be someone I’m not,” the 18-year-old actress said. “It just helps that I’m a good kid. It helps that I just don’t like doing crazy stuff. I want to continue to be that positive light or positive influence for young people because I feel like sometimes we lack that. I feel like I’m given that power or I’m given that position … people know my name for bigger reasons.”
How refreshing is that? Zendaya also spoke out on exactly what happened right after she heard Giuliana Rancic’s comments about her Oscar dreadlocks. Instead of spewing out comments back to her that kids her age would usually do, she went into her room to think about the whole thing. She wanted to make sure that any young girl or boy that saw her response would take it as something positive and be able to stand up for themselves as well.
“I had to really take my time and think about what my parents taught me, which is– the important things in the world are your voice and your knowledge,” she said.
Zendaya is quite smart for her young age and she certainly has the respect of everyone around her. Be sure to catch her on the Radio Disney Music Awards on Sunday, April 26, at 8 p.m. ET on the Disney Channel. How do you think she will do as host?
